Sealcloak vs Samsung Secure Folder: when you need an alternative

If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you already own one of the best privacy features on Android: Secure Folder. It's a separate locked space for apps and files, protected by Samsung Knox. So why would anyone want another app? Here's where Secure Folder shines, where a vault like Sealcloak fits better, and how to use them together.

Quick answer

On a Galaxy phone, Secure Folder is excellent for keeping whole apps (a second WhatsApp, a private browser) in a separate locked space. Sealcloak is for files: it works on any Android phone, adds decoy vaults, a calculator disguise, intruder photos and encrypted backup files you control. Many people use both.

Where Secure Folder is the better tool

Secure Folder works at the system level. It isn't just a hidden album; it's a separate space with its own apps, its own copies of those apps' data, and its own lock. You can install a second WhatsApp or a separate browser inside it and they won't share anything with the copies outside. Photos taken by the camera inside Secure Folder stay inside it. For hiding whole apps and their activity, nothing in a normal app can match that.

It's also backed by Samsung Knox, the security platform built into Galaxy hardware, and it costs nothing extra. If you have a Galaxy phone and haven't set it up, it's worth doing.

Where Sealcloak fits better

The obvious one: Secure Folder only exists on Samsung Galaxy phones. Xiaomi, Redmi, Pixel, Motorola, vivo, OPPO, realme, OnePlus and Infinix owners need something else, and families with mixed phones can't share one approach. Sealcloak runs on any Android phone from Android 8.0.

It also adds things Secure Folder doesn't try to do. You can have up to three separate vaults, each with its own pattern, and nothing reveals how many exist. Coerce opens a believable decoy vault if someone forces you to unlock. Intruder photos show who tried to get in. And the vault can be disguised as a working calculator.

Backups are the other big difference. Sealcloak's encrypted backups are files you keep wherever you like, and they restore on any Android phone with your recovery phrase. If you move from a Galaxy to another brand, your vault comes with you.

Keep them locked, offline

Sealcloak encrypts your photos, videos and files on your phone. No account, no cloud, no internet permission.

Privacy: on-device or online

Inside Secure Folder, apps behave like normal apps: they can go online, sync and send data, because that's what a second WhatsApp is for. That's the point, not a flaw. But it means Secure Folder isn't an offline place by default.

Sealcloak is offline by design. It has no internet permission, collects no data and has no account. Your photos exist encrypted on your phone and in the backup files you make, nowhere else.

Using both on a Galaxy phone

Secure Folder and Sealcloak work well together. A common setup:

  1. Use Secure Folder for apps you want separate: a second messaging account, a private browser, a banking app.
  2. Use Sealcloak for your most personal photos, videos and documents, where you want a decoy, intruder photos and portable encrypted backups.
  3. If you like, install Sealcloak inside Secure Folder for two layers: Samsung's lock, then Sealcloak's pattern and encryption.
  4. Keep your Sealcloak recovery phrase on paper, away from the phone.

Common Secure Folder questions

What happens to Secure Folder if I forget its lock? Samsung offers reset options that depend on your settings and account, so check them before you need them. In Sealcloak, a forgotten pattern is handled by the vault's 9-word recovery phrase; nobody else, including us, can reset it.

Does moving photos into Secure Folder remove them from the gallery? Moving does; copying doesn't. Look in the main gallery afterwards and empty its recycle bin, which keeps deleted pictures for a while. The same habit applies to any vault: Sealcloak offers to keep originals, and you delete them from the gallery yourself once you've checked the vault.

Can someone see that Secure Folder exists? You can hide its icon, but it still appears in Settings. That's why Sealcloak doesn't show how many vaults you have: each pattern opens its own vault and nothing lists the others.

On a phone without Secure Folder

If your phone isn't a Galaxy, check whether your Android version offers Private space, Android's own separate area for apps, or whether your brand has its own version (names differ by brand). For files and photos, a vault app is the most consistent option across brands. Our guides on hiding photos on Android and hiding apps cover each brand's built-in options.

Verdict

On a Galaxy phone, keep Secure Folder for apps; it's excellent at that. For photos and files, Sealcloak adds what Secure Folder doesn't do: multiple vaults, a decoy, intruder photos, a calculator disguise and offline encrypted backups that move with you to any Android phone. On every other Android phone, Sealcloak gives you a private vault Samsung owners already take for granted.

Frequently asked questions
